1253 After Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett have stood in for Robin Hood director Ridley Scott at the film's press conference this morning, the Telegraph's man David Gritten is feeling no more heartened about the opening day's events:

"Normally, an opening film in Cannes is the first public screening to take place, which gives these events an excitement and a lustre that is unique to this festival. Giving distributors Universal the right to open the film on the very same day as the Cannes screening may turn out to be a strategic mistake on the part of the festival’s administrators.

In terms of quality, Scott’s movie is competent rather than visionary, and while its two leads Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett, show significant on-screen chemistry, the lengthy battle scenes overwhelm the picture. Intriguingly, the end of the film hints that the Robin Hood legend we all know begins only after the final reel.

Yet the thought occurs that Crowe and Blanchett are rather advanced in years to play these characters as it is - so goodness knows how old they would be for the sequel."

1203 Telegraph film critic David Gritten is feeling cheated by a flat first day in Cannes; like many other critics he's already seen Robin Hood. He writes:

"Cannes has rarely experienced such a flat, low-key screening of a Festival opening film as Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood today.

The Palais de Festival auditorium where the film was screened was perhaps only 75 per cent full.

Clearly the reason for this is that so many critics have already seen Robin Hood, which opens in several territories across the world today. Most critics have already filed reviews, which have already appeared in print and in broadcast media over the past few days."
