If you still think it's okay to eat stinky cheese and cold cuts while you're with baby than you've likely been living in a cave for the past forty years. Booze and coffee are out too. But the fact of the matter is that today we know a lot more about pregnancy and the foods and habits that are important to our baby's health.
More and more studies have surfaced providing the modern mommy with a plethora of new information on a healthy pregnancy including what foods you should emphasize and what you should avoid. Bottom line--keeping mom healthy is the best way to keep baby healthy.
How can you pave the way for your baby's health? How can your habits define the way that your baby eats as well?
1. Consider Detoxing Before Pregnancy
If you're considering getting pregnant clean out your system because it's where the baby will be for nine months. Before you even start trying to get pregnant considering detoxifying your body and life. Cut out processed foods, caffeine, alcohol, meat, and dairy and make staying balanced your biggest goal. Here's a good detox plan.
2. A Whole Foods Diet is Like Mother Like Child
According to a study from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, reported in the Post and Courier, if you're a mother to a finicky child, it could be your fault especially if you submitted to that craving for fried chicken and milk shakes throughout your pregnancy.
According to head researcher Josephine Todrank:
This highlights the importance of eating a healthy diet and refraining from drinking alcohol during pregnancy and nursing. If the mother drinks alcohol, her child may be more attracted to alcohol because the developing fetus 'expects' that whatever comes from the mother must be safe. If she eats healthy food, the child will prefer healthy food. And according to the study there are far larger implications caused by toning your child's taste buds while still just a fetus. Kids that have an aversion to crucial fruits and vegetables are prone to deficiencies and the diseases that result.
3. Avoid Sugar-free Junk Foods like Diet Soda
According to an article on Food Navigator, The European Parliament’s Environment committee is pushing for a warning label on products containing aspartame for pregnant women. The warning label would read: "Contains aspartame (a source of phenylalanine; might be unsuitable for pregnant women)."
According to Food Navigator:
It follows the publication of a Danish epidemiological study that saw a statistical association between the consumption of soft drinks containing sweeteners and increased risk of preterm delivery as a result of a medical decision following complications. The authors said the results, whether or not there is a causal link, needs to be confirmed by other studies.
4. Avoid Flea and Tick Shampoos
Brian Merchant wrote some startling facts about the use of flea and tick shampoos by pregnant moms. "Mothers of autistic children were twice as likely to use pet flea shampoos, which contain organophosphates or pyrethroids, according to one study that has not yet been published."
5. Get Your Omega 3's
These are downright essential to pregnancy health because they ensure proper development of a baby’s brain and immune system. Get them from hemp seeds, flax seeds, and chia seeds. DHA and EPA are found in algae, spirulina, blue-green algae, and chlorella. Omega 6's are found in many vegetarian foods including olive oil, whole grains, and avocados. I also guard against any deficiency with, in my opinion, the best omega fatty acid supplements and oils on the market: Udo's Oil 3.6.9 Blend. You can also eat small fatty fish like sardines.
6. Avoid Trans Fats
Naturally Savvy reported that trans fats can be harmful to pregnant women and their babies.
According to the story:
A recent study by Dr. Charles J. Glueck, of the Jewish Hospital Cholesterol Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, and his colleagues found a higher percentage of fetal loss in women who consumed high amounts of trans fats.
