Christine Field, author of Life Skills for Kids, says it's important for parents to start early involving children in household chores, the Kansas City Star reported.
"When my son was about 16 months old he loved to be with me when I was folding clothes," said Field, a former lawyer-turned-full-time mom, to the newspaper. "Of course, he wasn't any help. But I would still give him washcloths to fold. Now Daniel is 3, and he's our towel man. He folds all the towels and puts them in the linen closet. He feels like he is needed. He feels like he is counted on."

Put a playful spin on chores. Whether it's cleaning up to a favorite tune or turning housework into a game, kids will be more eager to pitch in with routine chores if fun is part of the job description.

Being gradually aware of the significance in children’s involving in housework, parents are changing from a role of overprotection to a more reasonable level of encouraging initiative participation in household chores.
It’s inspiring and meaningful to see that children are no longer deprived of their rights to develop practical skills in housework, instead, they are given the chances to contribute their shares and are often rewarded with a spiritual fulfillment.
Fortunately, I’m one of the countless teenagers who have benefited a great deal from this kind of perceptual transition of our parents. I have frequently been encouraged to deal with cooking the meal, sweeping the floor as well as washing dishes since an early age of seven. And I am proud enough to take the responsibility of preparing a good meal when Mom and Dad are delayed by their work. Thanks to their early realization and ever-lasting persistence in the cultivation of my independence, I have grown more skillful and willing to take my share of obligation either at home or at school.
