China, EU optimistic about upcoming summit in Beijing

The 10th China-EU Summit will be held at the end of November in Beijing. Officials from both sides are expected to discuss political and economic issues, including regional security, climate change and trade.

Optimism and self-confidence, that's how the EU's Ambassador to China, Serge Abou, describes the attitude that both China and the EU will have at the upcoming summit.

He says the summit aims to reinforce long-term cooperation and forge a new partnership between the two sides. Currently, the EU is China's number one trading partner, and China, the biggest supplier for the EU. They are also among each other's most important partners in science and technology, higher education and tourism.

EU ambassador to China Serge Abou said, "We have achieved a lot in 10 years. I'd qualify this summit of optimism and self-confidence. Because China has become even more confident after the successful party congress. We're more confident about future of unification of our continent with a new treaty adopted recently."

Abou says China and the EU will discuss a series of issues regarding regional security. The EU also hopes to collaborate with China on new solutions to problems, like product safety.

Abou said, "We cannot compromise on safety of our citizens. But we don't want to use the question of safety of products as a protection for protectionist attitude to the country. We want to cooperate with Chinese authorities in order to increase safety to track guilty companies It's a question of cooperation than blaming each other."

Abou says the EU hopes to have intense discussions with China on increasing cooperation in energy conservation and fighting climate change. Plus, the trade imbalance and the protection of intellectual property rights will also be high on the agenda of the upcoming summit.
