US opposes Taiwan´s UN bid
US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Christensen has expressed concern over Taiwan's referendum attempt on its application for UN membership. The US State Department has posted his remarks on its website, reiterating its opposition to the matter.
Christensen says the referendum is inconsistent with Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's promise not to promote such a move during his term.
Christensen also says the move is dangerous and provocative. He warns that it would violate the interest of people in the Taiwan region as well as the United States. The US official describes the referendum as ill-conceived and potentially harmful, urging Taiwan's perceptive and intelligent people to make a sound judgment.
