China to develop AGRI, boost rural incomes

This year's central rural work conference has ended with promises to improve rural infrastructure, promote agricultural development and maintain income growth for farmers.

The promises are meant to be met by the end of next year.

Participants at the two-day meeting said more effort should be made to ensure constant supplies of major farm produce. They stressed that problems concerning rural areas should be promptly solved.

All these, as part of a move to push forward the "new countryside" scheme.

Six key points were highlighted.

The first concerns more beneficial policies for farmers, and increased investment in agriculture and rural areas.

The second guarantees supplies of major agricultural products, and continued rises in farmers' incomes.

The third refers to boosting agricultural infrastructure and faster improvements in the conditions for farming.

The fourth point involves enhancing technical progress in the agricultural sector and the cultivation of human resources.

Meanwhile, social services should be also expanded in rural areas.

The fifth, social undertakings in rural areas should be revved up, while rural infrastructure should be reinforced.

And finally, basic operating systems in rural areas should be stabilized, and reforms deepened accordingly.

Since the 1980s, China has held a central rural work conference every year. The main aim of this gathering is to decide what work in agriculture and rural regions needs to be done, and who will do it, in the year ahead.
