China, Malawi establish diplomatic ties

China and the east African country of Malawi have now officially established diplomatic relations.

Chinese Foreign Minister, Yang Jiechi, and an official deputy from Malawi signed a joint communique on December 28th last year.

The communique states the two governments recognize each other and formally establish diplomatic relations in line with the two people's wishes. The Chinese government says it supports the government of Malawi to safeguard its national sovereignty and develop its economy. Malawi's government recognizes there is only one China and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.

After the signing ceremony, the two sides discussed developing bilateral relations.
