China repairs Tibetan Buddhist Monastery
Restoration work has started on Taer Monastery in China's northwestern province of Qinghai. This is one of the most famous monasteries of the Yellow Sect of Tibetan Buddhism, and it's the third initiative of its kind in less than twenty years. The restoration of two buildings of the 400-year-old monastery is expected to be completed next year.

A large-scale repair of the monastery in 1992 cost 37-million yuan or over 5-million US dollars.And the central government has already poured 25 million yuan into this new round of restoration work. Construction of the monastery began in 1560 in honor of Tson-Khapa, founder of the Yellow Sect of Tibetan Buddhism, and the mentor of the 1st Panchan Lama and Dalai Lama. It is noted for its religious paintings, appliques and yak butter sculptures. Over the centuries, the monastery has been damaged by fires, earthquakes, landslides and foundation subsidence.
