S. Koreans continue protests

South Korean protesters are continuing to rally against US beef imports. The most recent protests come while Seoul's Trade minister is meeting with US counterparts in Washington.

More than 10,000 protesters gathered in downtown Seoul to hold a candle-lit vigil on Saturday. They were denouncing the government's move to resume beef imports.

On Friday evening, South Korean Trade Minister, Kim Jong-hoon met US trade representative Susan Schwab in Washington, D.C. Following the meeting, Kim said private consultations on the deal to re-open South Korea's market to US beef -- after a four year hiatus -- will stretch over the weekend.

Choi Choi Soon-il, Protester, said, "The minister went to Washington to try to re-work the negotiation. But it's wrong because what we want is the re-negotiation."

Protesters have held candle-lit vigils almost every night over recent weeks. They're demanding the South Korean government re-negotiate the beef import deal with the US.

The protest against the South Korean government -- in office barely three months -- were sparked by a public outcry over a deal to widen the country's market to US beef imports.
