Chinese President Hu Jintao has met for talks with Venezuelan leader, Hugo Chavez. Chavez is on a three-day state visit. Both have agreed to push bilateral relations to a new high.

Chavez received a warm welcome from his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao, at the Great Hall of the People.

During their talks, Hu Jintao thanked Venezuela for its help after the May 12th Wenchuan earthquake, as well as its support to Beijing Olympics and Paralympics.

Hu Jintao told Chavez that both countries are in vital period of development and should share experiences and strengthen cooperation. He hoped the two countries will deepen political ties and continue exchanges between legislative bodies, government departments and ruling parties.

The Chinese President also wanted to further mutually beneficial relations with Venezuela in areas of energy, agriculture and infrastructure. He said the government will continue to support Chinese enterprises to invest in Venezuela and establish economic cooperative zone in Venezuela.

Cultural exchanges have also been emphasized. Hu Jintao said both countries should continue cooperation in international and regional affairs.

Chavez agreed, and said his country attaches great importance to China-Venezuela relations and will continue to strengthen ties with China in various fields.

After the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of cooperative documents on economy, energy, education and judicial issues.

On the same day, top legislator, Wu Bangguo, also held talks with Chavez.
