Ivanovic wins French Open final

Ana Ivanovic has won her first Grand Slam title. The provisional world number one beat 13th seeded Russian Dinara Safina in straight sets on Saturday.

Ivanovic had the upper hand in the opening set with a break in the first game, followed by another in the fifth to lead 4-1. But she then wavered on her own serve. An improving Safina managed two successive breaks to level the score at 4-4.

Not so fast! Ivanovic broke again immediately and held her nerves to take the set, 6-4. Talk about a climax midway through the second set: Ivanovic went 4-2 ahead after surviving four deuces on her own serve. The Russian then held on after another mammoth game. However, with the score at 3-5 in Ivanovic's favour, she was unable to repeat the feat.

The 20-year old took the game to love and with it her first Grand Slam title. Ivanovic had already been set to replace Sharapova as the top female player in the world on Monday.

Ana Ivanovic, French Open Winner said "Winning Grand Slam is something I dreamt since I was a little kid, so achieving that goal, it's very thrilling. You know, you work so hard and you're, off the court, on the court, and you put so much effort into it. I loved the game and I enjoy playing, so this is the best reward I can get. It's something, it's my incentive, you know, to keep working hard, and, you know, win more of these trophies."
