Sharapova suffers defeat at Wimbledon

Maria Sharapova is out at Wimbledon. She suffered a shock defeat at the hands of fellow Russian Alla Kudryavtseva on day four of the Championships. American Andy Roddick, the men's sixth seed, is also out, beaten in four sets by unseeded Serbian Janko Tipsarevic.

Sharapova, the ladies' number three seed, made a series of unforced errors in the first set to hand it to Kudryavtseva 6-2. It was no better for Sharapova in the second as her fellow Russian took it 6-4 with this forehand winner. This was the biggest upset so far for the 154-ranked Kudryavtseva. Next up for Kudryavtseva is China's Shuai Peng in the third round.

Maria Sharapova said "You have to find a way to keep your head up, even though it's pretty tough, because you put the effort in and you work hard and you dedicate yourself every single day to be a better player, and professional and sometimes the work doesn't pay off until you never know when. I don't know when that work's going to pay off. I had a great off season, came into Australia, played really great tennis and match in match out I felt great, I was playing better and better and things just worked out."

Alla Kudryavtseva said "Well maybe it wasn't a little too much for me, but I did expect to win, I did think about winning, not just going and playing. The way I warmed up, I was trying my best shots. Actually everything worked, so I was like well, I'm in good shape and she doesn't play her best tennis at the moment so, yeah, I was thinking about winning."

Venus Williams, Erakovic & Tanasugarn win

Defending women's champion Venus Williams struggled in the first set but rolled to a 7-5, 6-2 victory British Anne Keothavong. New Zealand's Marina Erakovic beat Julia Goerges of Germany 6-2, 7-6 to go through to the last 32. Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn caused a shock, beating 13th seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

Roddick out, Nadal moves on

Another shock on the men's side, as Andy Roddick ended his run at Wimbledon. He met a tough challenge from Janko Tipsarevic, who rolled to score this spectacular winner, taking the second set 7-5. Tipsarevic won the match 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 after Roddick dropped this shot.

Men's second seed Rafael Nadal is safely through to the third round. Nadal came back to win 5-7, 6-2, 7-6, 6-3 to continue his bid to become the first player since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win the French Open and Wimbledon back to back.
