Taiwan hosts porcelain fest

Taiwan has a porcelain industry all its own. It started in Yingge, a town in Taipei county. Now the tiny community is acting as host for the Taiwan International Porcelain Art Festival.

Zhou Xiwei, Head of Taipei county, opened the festival by igniting a stack of tree branches. The stack, called "Yeshao", once was an indispensable part of the process of producing porcelain - back in ancient times.

Residents in Yingge county started producing porcelain during the Qing dynasty. The heyday came between the 1960s and 90s. Now the town's Porcelain Museum has made Yingge a popular tourist destination.
