Powell wins 100m at London GP

Former World record holder Asafa Powell has powered to victory in his final competitive 100 metres before the Beijing Olympics. He clocked in a time of 9.94 seconds at the London Grand Prix on Friday.

Powell was supposed to race American world champion, Tyson Gay, but Gay was forced to withdraw because of a hamstring injury. Despite a faltering start, Powell powered through the field and seemed to ease up in the final stages before posting a winning time of 9.94 seconds.

Asafa Powell said "It is not really for anyone to be confident about myself it's just me that has to be confident about myself and know that I can get the gold medal.I guess with Usain and Tyson there I would have been more alert but for me it is not to worry about the competitors, just focus on running fast by myself."

Meanwhile, in the men's 110-metre hurdles, David Oliver won with a time of 13.20 seconds. Fellow

American Anwar Moore took second place but was more than half a second slower with his time of 13.52 seconds.

Bolt shines in 200M at London GP

The second day of the London Grand Prix athletics at Crystal Palace saw Jamaica lay down their marker for Olympic glory Saturday, when Usain Bolt pulled away from the pack to win the 200 metres in 19.76 seconds.

The 100-metre world record holder demonstrated that he's right on track for gold with a masterful victory. After surging ahead of the competition at the half-way stage, Bolt put plenty of daylight between himself and the chasing pack. He won by half a second from American Wallace Spearmon, despite easing up at the end. Bolt will soon have to decide whether he is going to run in both the 100 and 200 in Beijing, and his winning time of 19.76 seconds may well persuade him to go for the double.

Jamaica also recorded a one-two in the women's 100, Veronica Campbell overtaking her team-mate Shelly-Ann Fraser towards the end of the race to win in 10.87. Campbell's classy victory should sway the Jamaican selectors to pick her for the 100 metres in Beijing, where she will also be defending her 200-metre title.

Predictably, the USA also had their share of the spoils. World champion Kerron Clement easily won the men's 400 metre hurdles, while the American team recorded the fastest relay time this year in the four-by-100 event. The team's time of 37.80 seconds was just 0.4 of a second adrift of the world record.
