如何使用词典

　　适合托福和GRE考试的词典不少，但是以选择韦氏(Merriam Webster’s)词典为佳。其中《韦氏大学词典》(Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary)又是使用较多的，注释较详细，而且对应托福和GRE中所考的意思。该词典有电子版，使用方便。例如，buck(雄鹿;美元(俚语))在TOEFL 和GRE考试中常考它“反对”的意思，这一意思在韦氏词典中比较明显：to resist or oppose stubbornly(She bucked the system)。

　　如何使用词库(thesaurus)

　　所谓词库，就是相关词的集合，包括同义词、近义词以及在某方面相关联的词的集合。记忆一个词的时候如果能记住该词的所有相关词，不仅扩大了词汇量，而且该词本身也比较容易记住。这类词典一般按照字母顺序或分类排列，可以利用词库本身的索引查找。较常见的词库有Roget’s Thesaurus与The Merriam-Webster Thesaurus。以 important为例，The Merriam-Webster Thesaurus列出了它的常见同义词、相关词、反义词：

　　同义词：big, consequential, considerable, material, meaningful, momentous, significant, substantial, weighty

　　相关词：conspicuous, distinctive, exceptional, impressive, marked, memorable, notable, noteworthy, noticeable, outstanding, prominent, remarkable, salient, unusual; essential; valuable, worthwhile; worthy; effective, potent, powerful, telling; big-time, first-class, first-rate, front-page, top-notch; distinguished, eminent, famous, noted

　　反义词：unimportant(绝对反义词), inconsiderable, little, minor, paltry, petty, slight, trivial

　　除了The Merriam-Webster Thesaurus，如果只是为了学习同义词，还可以查阅《韦氏同义词辞典》。网上也有一个很好的词库，网址是www. wordnet. princeton.edu，是Princeton大学的研究成果，适合考托福、GRE与一般英语学习时查阅。
