有一次一个学生把一句英文翻译成“人们在十一点钟时阻止了一场似乎不可避免的战争。”英文的原文是：“The war, which seemed certain, was prevented at the eleventh hour。”单从字面上看，这个译文似乎没有什么错误，译得很对应，但实际却译错了，因为at the eleventh hour 并非是“十一点钟”，而是“最后的时刻”(the last moment)。

再如：She was asked，at the eleventh hour，to step in and direct the play。（在最后时刻，她被请来导演这出戏。）

这句成语出自圣经的《马太福音》，有个阔人想雇几个人到他的园子里去干活，他从早上五点就开始雇人，雇到最后一个人时已经是夜里很晚了。干完活后付工钱，结果大早上来的和夜里来的都一视同仁地得到了一枚银币，弄的一大早就开始干活的人极为不满，早知如此，还不如夜里十一点钟来呢，因为只要不超过十二点，都能得到同样的报酬，很像中国的“来的早不如来的巧”，从此eleventh hour 就有了挽回局面的关键时刻的含义。

英文里还有一种表达方式与“午夜、零时”有关： zero hour （零时，关键时刻），the small hours （深夜，午夜刚过的一段时间）

看，现在已经到了签订这份合同的最后时刻了。如果我们不能在明天早上十点以前把合同发送给顾客的话，这笔生意就全丢了，所以必要的话我们开夜车也得把合同赶写出来。
