Ford Announces Plans To Build Third Car Assembly Plant In China

Ford Motor Co. (F) Friday announced it plans to build a new car assembly plant here, its third such facility in China - part of a broader effort to overcome the company's auto maker's late start in China and catch up with key competitors.

The new plant, to be built with an investment of $490 million (3.34 billion yuan), will be run jointly with a Chinese partner and Japan's Mazda Motor Corp. (7261.TO), as are its two existing plants. It will produce Ford's next-generation Focus compact car and be capable initially of producing 150,000 vehicles a year when it opens in the city of Chongqing in southwestern China in 2012, the company said.

The move would boost Ford's and Mazda's combined annual production capacity in China - long a comparatively weak link in Ford's global operations - to 600,000 vehicles from the current 447,000. Ford would not say how much of the combined capacity is its own and how much is Mazda's.

Despite the move, Ford has a lot more ground to make up for in order to catch up with key competitors in China - Volkswagen AG (VOW.XE), General Motors Co., Hyundai Motor Co. (HYMLY) and Toyota Motor Corp. (TM), which are the four top auto concerns in China's fast-growing auto market.

Toyota, for instance, is already capable of producing 800,000 vehicles a year and expects to lift that to more than one million in a few years.
