India protests French turban ban
In New Delhi, hundreds of Sikh protestors have held a candle-light march against a French law banning conspicuous religious signs in public schools.
The protest comes days before French President Nicholas Sarkozy visits India. The French law was passed in 2004, and is aimed at Islamic head coverings but it also forces Sikh students to remove their turbans or be expelled.
The protestors want the ban on turbans in French schools pulled. They plan to appeal to the Indian government to raise the issue with Sarkozy during his upcoming visit.
