Travel resumes partially

The 2 major routes linking the north and the south of China, namely the Beijing-Guangzhou railway and the Beijing-Zhuhai highway, transport most of the passengers travelling during the Spring Festival. And they also carry coal for power generation as well as other essentials.

China's Ministry of Railways says the southern section of the Beijing-Guangzhou railway resumed operation Wednesday night after intensive repair work.

The ministry has also mapped out a new transportation scheme to help stranded passengers get home. The power supply to the railway system had been cut off as power grids in the south were crushed by continuous freezing rain and snow.
