1st batch of patients arrive in Xi´an

The deadly earthquake has left tens of thousands dead and hundreds of thousands injured. Hospitals nearby are filled to capacity and many of the injured are being transferred to hospitals in other provinces and municipalities. On Wednesday, one group arrived in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province.

Tuesday afternoon, 261 injured quake survivors arrived on board a special hospital train from Mianyang to Xi'an. The victims come mainly from Mianyang and Guangyuan, two of the cities hit hardest by the quake.

After a journey of 16 hours, they arrived at Xi'an station and were taken to Xijing Hospital for treatment.

In the carriages, hooks for intravenous bottles are prepared, ready for infusion for patients in need.

A railway worker said, "We didn't have these hooks before. They were set up just last night. Now every train has them."
