Farmers have been busy reaping wheat in China's northern regions lately. The country's main wheat production base - in Shandong, Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces - is seeing an 8-year high in its production output. Good weather, food price rises and preferential government policy are contributing to this year's good harvest.
As the second largest wheat production base in China, Shandong province saw about 3.37 million hectares of wheat, slightly higher than last year. This year's overall output is expected to hit an 8-year high.
Bai Yongcun, farmer from Heze City, Shandong Province, said, "I couldn't have imagined that this year would be a good harvest year. With rises in wheat prices, farmers are very glad and enthusiastic."
Shandong province will employ roughly 1.8 million sets of wheat reaping machines. The reaping period lasts about 20 days and will finish by the end of June.
Guanzhong region in Shaanxi province has already reaped some wheat this week. Overall wheat production in the province is expected to increase 3 to 5 percent over last year.
Liao Qingliang, farmer from Tongguan County, Shaanxi Province, said, "This year is much better than last year. This year, we are expecting one and a half to two times as much wheat per hectare."
Local governments in Shaanxi province have helped harvests by subsidizing about 1.17 million hectares of wheat this year, sparking farmers' enthusiasm.
