China launches 1st anti-doping agency

China has launched its first anti-doping agency -- including a state-of-the-art laboratory -- in the heart of the Beijing Olympics site.

It will be staffed with 150 people, including 20 foreign experts. The lab is considered the most advanced anti-doping laboratory in the world. It will be used for all 45-hundred doping tests during the 2008 Olympics. Organizers are touting the agency as China's commitment to a drug-free Olympics.

Duan Shijie, Minister of Chinese Sports Admin.,said, "Ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games, which Beijing is going to host, and at a time when the Olympic movement is concerned with doping issues, the Chinese government has approved the establishment of the Chinese Anti-Doping Center for international cooperation and to shoulder its share of the obligation to fight against doping in sports. This demonstrates the positive role China is playing in the campaign against doping."
