Chelsea sign Nicolas Anelka

Chelsea have completed a 29.4 million US dollar deal to sign French striker Nicolas Anelka from Bolton.

Chelsea manager Avram Grant believes his new signing will provide the extra firepower to help them overcome the loss of Salomon Kalou and Didier Drogba to the Africa Cup of Nations during the next month.

The 28 year old has signed a four and a half year contract and could play a part in Saturday's London derby with Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League.

It is statistically the most one-sided fixture in Premier League history - Chelsea have lost only once to Spurs and never at home in the last 30 league meetings.

With his stars heading to Africa, it is a situation that has left Grant increasingly frustrated.

Avram Grant, Chelsea manager, said, "When you sign the players, and you want them to play for your clubs, and in the middle of the competition (English Premier League), you don't see them for more than 10 games in a very important competition, you need to think if you will sign four players (from Africa), or just two. Because it's not good for the team, I think it's not good for the players also, and I respect the African (Nations) Cup. I think they need to find another date - or do something else."
