China's top economic planning agency is urging oil and power companies to ensure supplies for earthquake-hit areas and the Beijing Olympic Games in August.

China's top economic planning agency is urging oil and power companies to ensure supplies for earthquake-hit areas and the Beijing Olympic Games in August.

The National Development and Reform Commission announced over the weekend, that the country's two top oil producers, Sinopec and PetroChina, should ensure fuel production, especially diesel, for the summer.

The NDRC says coal production in Sichuan Province accounts for 4 percent of the country's total, and it should resume production as soon as possible. The central government is ordering PetroChina and Sinopec to fill the supply gap by importing diesel and gasoline.

The government says it will share the cost with the companies by giving them tax rebates and other aid.
