Heavy rains hit parts of China

Parts of China have been stricken by heavy rain triggered by tropical storm Fengshen forcing local residents out of their homes and causing landslides. Intensive relief work is currently underway.

Tropical storm Fengshen brought a fresh round of heavy rainfall in eastern China's Anhui Province on Saturday. Flood prevention work along the Yangtze River section in the province is facing many challenges once again. Aiming to ensure the safety of residents, the authorities are patrolling along the river banks and also organizing the transfer of necessary materials. This year, Anhui has reserved nearly 50,000 more tons of sand and stone, raising the amount along the dams to 350,000 tons.

In South China's Guangdong Province, which has been suffering from heavy rain for a month, Fengshen has worsened the situation killing 14 people and leaving nine missing. Two townships there have been flooded in nearly two-meter deep water. Records show this kind of flood only happens every two hundred years. The rising waters have breached dams in the province and hundreds of people have been evacuated. Authorities predict the bad weather may continue in central and eastern areas of Guangdong.

In the neighboring province of Jiangxi, there have been a number of mountain slides and all people in affected areas have been evacuated.
